50/50 Luncheon Raffle Going Strong for a Worthy Cause!
Each month CAMP attendees had the opportunity to participate in a 50/50 raffle drawing during the monthly luncheon. 50% of the proceeds from the raffle went to an organization that CAMP chose to support during the year. The other 50% was given to the winner of the drawing. Proceeds from the 2005-2006 50/50 raffle drawings went to A Father's Place located in Conway, SC.
Our mission is to engage fathers in the positive support of their children and enhance community support for fatherhood throughout Horry County.

What is the nature of the problem.
A Fathers Place serves the fathers and families of Horry County. The specific challenge addressed by A Father’s Place is father absence. Our project benefits the lives of at-risk children and strengthens community by increasing the number of non-custodial fathers who are actively engaged in the spiritual, emotional and material support of their children. Serving the entire Horry County region, A Fathers Place has several significant trends impacting the need for its work:
_Births to single mothers in Horry County have increased steadily over four decades. In 2001, 1083 babies, 41.8% of all babies, 31.2% of Caucasian babies, and 75.4% of African-American and others where born to single mothers. (SC Kids Count 2003)
_Single-parent families are most likely to be poor. In 1999, 36.9% of children in Horry County in single-parent families lived in poverty, but only 8.6% of children in married-couple families were poor. Children in single-parent families made up 58.6% of all the county’s children living in poverty. (SC Kids Count 2003)
_72% of adolescent murders, 60% of America’s rapists, and 70% of long-term prison inmates come from fatherless homes. Source: Popenoe, David. 1996 Life Without Father: Compelling New Evidence that Fatherhood and Marriage are Indispensable for the Good of Children and Society. New York: Free Press
_Children with involved, loving fathers are significantly more likely to do well in school, have healthy self-esteem, exhibit empathy and pro-social behavior, and avoid high-risk behaviors such as drug use, truancy, and criminal activity compared to children who have uninvolved fathers. (Father Facts 4th edition- N.F.I.)
Data shows that Horry County is enduring a steady increase in single parent households. Most of these households have no father. As such our communities are increasingly confronted with the consequences of father absence, especially within the African-American community. Public service advertising will allow A Father’s Place to present and distribute information on the consequences of father absence and ways to increase father engagement. Also the image of fatherhood has been tarnished in recent years with fathers typically being portrayed as buffoonish and inept. The advertising will allow for more positive portrayals of fathers and fatherhood and highlight the power of father presence. Further we will be able to increase the public’s awareness of our program and service offerings. Ultimately a more informed public will lead to more fathers being closely engaged with their children because every child deserves to have a responsible, committed, and involved father.
