South by Southeast Recipient for Public Service Campaign

Each year, Coastal Advertising and Marketing Professionals (CAMP) selects a recipient for a multi-media public service campaign to support a local or regional non-profit organization on behalf of public interests and community betterment. This year’s recipient is South by Southeast.

These days, the average cost of an instrument can be expensive. Studies have shown that regardless of socioeconomic upbringing, students who participate in music performance score higher on standardized tests, SATs and reading proficiency exams than their classmates who did not play an instrument.* But not all students can afford instruments and area schools are finding it difficult to fund music programs to keep the students involved. South by Southeast, formed by area music lovers and educators in 2003, addresses these issues by providing assistance and support to local music education programs with their goal being to offset some of the costs associated with the music education of young people in our area and by providing instruments for underprivileged children. South by Southeast does this through events, purchased memberships and contributions to fund school programs. Some of their efforts include projects like Dr. David Bankston’s Guitars in the Classroom and donations to the Myrtle Beach Middle School Orchestra as well as the Long Bay Symphony Youth Orchestra.
